DON'T TAX YOU, DON'T TAX ME...

EU to demand 30% emissions cut (Staff and agencies, January 10, 2007, Guardian Unlimited)

The European commission today unveils an energy blueprint that calls for deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, more use of renewable sources and increased competition.

Commissioners are expected to endorse a plan that calls for all developed countries to cut 1990-level emissions by 30% by 2020.

At the same time, the commission is set to propose that the EU set a target to cut its own emissions by 20% during the same period...

Is this to mask the failure of the EU to meet its Kyoto targets? By the time 2015 rolls around there will probably be a new proposal to cut emissions even lower, with a target date another decade into the future. Unless of course we are back to fearing global cooling by that time.

Wait there's more, the EU announced that all developed countries will be required to increase funding for EU infrastructure, social services and agriculture by 2015...

Why don't they just go whole hog and 'mandate' an elimination of carbon emissions by 2030, and then go have a big dinner somewhere, toasting themselves all night long?

KRS is right on the money - their next move will be to link trade in Europe with 'donations' to support EU markets (including social services). It would be interesting to see President McCain's response to that.
