DOESN'T ANYBODY KNOW THEIR CARL SAGAN (via Bryan Francoeur and Mike Daley):

Scientists to move 'Doomsday Clock' hands (Reuters, Jan 12, 2007)

The keepers of the "Doomsday Clock" plan to move its hands forward Wednesday to reflect what they call worsening nuclear and climate threats to the world.

The symbolic clock, maintained by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, currently is set at seven minutes to midnight, with midnight marking global catastrophe.

Bushfires' colossal effect (Matthew Schulz, January 12, 2007, Herald-Sun)
VICTORIA'S monster bushfires have generated the power of more than 100 atomic bombs and pumped out millions of tonnes of pollution, greenhouse gas and toxic clouds, scientists say.

The tens of million of tonnes of carbon dioxide pumped into the atmosphere by the 1 million ha blaze exceed the combined emissions of the state's power stations, industry and cars by about 30 percent, according to figures compiled for the Herald Sun online by the CSIRO.

Victoria produced about 7.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in the past month from burning coal, petrol and gas; while bushfires raging in the same time pumped out 10.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.

In a prior episode where "science" was made subservient to liberal ideology Carl Sagan argued that the particulate matter released by nuclear detonations would cause "Nuclear Winter," just as the release from volcanoes tends to lower temperatures. Both these fires and the sort of half-assed nuclear war a North Korea might provoke ought to be good news for the global warming zealots.

When I worked at the US Army High Performance Computing Research Center in 1991 were we told to rush mesopheric simulations on the Cray-2 of the Kuwaiti oil fires, which Sagan solemnly predicted could cause a global ice age.

After several hundred hours of runtime we concluded that the global temperature change would be insignificant. I was the tech guy (didn't know the science) but the meterologists I talked to all said that Sagan's claims were competely bogus.

100 nukes? Why we could do North Korea AND the jailhouse with that.

That stupid clock as been stuck just short of midnight for over half a century now. No wonder they are expanding their self-induced hysteria to include "climate threats to the world".

(We must've done something about the oceans, because over ten years ago Ted Danson solemnly assured me that they'd be dead by now if we didn't "do something.")

It's in the schools as the kids come home and tell us our house will be underwater in 10 years due to global warming because that is what their science teacher is telling them.

Doomsday? I say it should be called "Boomsday Clock" - the world (albeit most of the developing world)is on verge of a building Boom and will take off like no other time in history - you can't stop capitalism even with nukes - hell, we nuked Nevada over 100 times and Vegas is still BOOMING!
