We'd have preferred that they film Steven Pressfield's excellent Gates of Fire, but this looks pretty cool

Pressfield's Amazon review looked good until the Mary Renault reference. Nothing could overcome that, not even a BrosJudd A+ review.
The movie looks to be great, can't wait til it gets on PPV mid/late '07

Nope, the '300' is going to be a dog.

I downloaded the extended look at the movie from the Apple Quicktime site. Early on the director and the fellow hired to choreograph the fight sequences are talking, and the latter talks about how he's bringing in all sorts of 'eastern' influences, such as tai chi, etc., because, after all, "we don't know how these fellows really fought".

What? WHAT? You don't know how a Greek hoplite fought and you're making a bloody movie about them? Try asking Victor Davis Hanson, you farging idiots.

We know a great deal about how Greek heavy infantry fought, and we know a fair bit about how the Persians fought. You won't see any of that in the '300'. Turned me off completely.
