US threatened to bomb Pakistan 'back to stone age' after 9/11: Musharraf (AFP, Sep 21, 2006)

The United States threatened to bomb Pakistan "back to the stone age" unless it cooperated in the US-led war on terror, President Pervez Musharraf said in an interview.

Musharraf, whose support for the US-led invasion of Afghanistan was instrumental in the fall of the hardline Taliban regime after the September 11, 2001 attacks, said the threat came from former deputy secretary of state Richard Armitage.

"The intelligence director told me that (Armitage) said, 'Be prepared to be bombed. Be prepared to go back to the stone age'," Musharraf said in the interview with the 60 minutes investigative news programme to be broadcast Sunday.

You title is spot on. Pakistan remains tied to the 19th century. Or perhaps the 8th.

But Armitage was just gossiping.

We had always understood this. Harken back to when Musharref went on television and annnounced that he was helping the Americns to invade Afghanistan.

I shall never forget it. He said something to the effect that defending al Qaeda was not worth millions of deaths. More importantly, this man, a hardened war leader, looked scared sh*tless. No one could doubt that he had just been made an offer he couldn't refuse.

Ponder what it takes to deter terrorism. It is not that terrorism is undeterrable, it is only that must be deterred by superior terror. Verious people keep asking who would have thought after 9-11 that we would not be hot again in the next five years. Ponder it.

Neither he nor we will do anything about the tribal areas, which is where the war ends.

which is where the war ends

More like, where it becomes encysted. And like cysts, you can leave them along and they might disappear on their own (usally by spewing their ugly, disgusting contents first), or they can become painful and need some minor surgery.
