The Hamas boss who is stoking resistance in Gaza...from the safety of Syria (Harry De Quetteville, 09/07/2006, Sunday Telegraph)

Attacking with helicopter strikes and machine gun fire, in tanks and on foot, Israel yesterday pushed deep into the Gaza strip - even though the "most wanted" target of its campaign was nowhere near.

Instead, hiding behind a thick veil of security, top Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal, 50, remained hundreds of miles away in Damascus, where he enjoys the protection of the Syrian regime.

For Israel he is the master puppeteer of Hamas, pulling the strings behind terror attacks and waging an unrelenting ideological war designed to wipe it off the map.

"Like bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, Meshaal is a terrorist of the worst kind," said Israel Justice Minister Haim Ramon.

Why attack Palestine when Syria is the problem?

Why are we still in Afghanistan when Pakistan is the problem?

Because invading Pakistan to deal with the a few tribes will really provoke an all out war.

Yes, Israel's operation in Gaza has already proven to be another disaster for Israel, as was obvious from the beginning. "Kick their *ss, don't piss on them" is a military maxim the Israelis don't seem to have ever grasped.

They couldn't remain a decent nation and do what you require of them.

Posted by: oj at July 9, 2006 12:21 PM

It's not what I require of them, but what Hamas does.

P.S. Does that make the USA not a decent nation, given what we've done to our opponents?

The only opponent we ever exterminated was the Indians--and they weren't civilized.

The Israelis won't do what you want to the Palestinians for the same reason we never do to our enemies.

Posted by: oj at July 9, 2006 4:16 PM

Who wrote of extermination except you? But go ahead and have the last word, experience shows that when you resort to that kind of bait&switch, it's pointless to continue.

Posted by: Annoying Old Guy at July 9, 2006 4:23 PM

Exactly. So when you say they should kick a** you aren't serious either. It's not worth becoming a** kickers to decent peoples. Your decency becomes you, even if it nullifies your prior sentiment.

Posted by: oj at July 9, 2006 4:29 PM

oj, come on. By 'kicking their *ss' he surely means something along the lines of "regime change Syria," which you yourself advocate. As opposed to something ineffectual which leaves the other guy kicking your *ss.

What's the difference? Imagine how bloody it would be for Israel to impose and maintain its own regime on the Palestinians. They long ago decided they weren't willing to be that murderous.

All we want for Sytria is that it be allowed to evolve democratically as Palestine has.

Posted by: oj at July 9, 2006 6:59 PM

A democratic evolution is all Israel and AOG want, too.

Posted by: pj at July 10, 2006 9:08 AM

Then leave the democratically elected regime alone.
