THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE BARCALOUNGER:

Woman kept £1.5m Lotto win secret from husband (ANITA SINGH, 1/21/06, The Scotsman)

A MYSTERY woman yesterday claimed she won £1.5 million on the National Lottery - but has never told her husband.

The woman, a mother-of-two who gave her name as Jane, called a radio show to reveal her astonishing secret.

For the past three years she has hidden her fortune from colleagues, friends and family.

It's not like any of us would notice a few more shoeboxes...

Brilliant! Works even if it's not true.

Shoeboxes? Paul Powell reference?

All over the British Isles, husbands who have two kids and had small drug problems 15 years ago are investigating, interrogating, cajoling, and smacking around their wives....

jd. Who's Paul Powell? I think the reference is to Imelda Marcos >> women-in-general and our fascination with footwear that may or may not be comfortable.

Paul Powell (also known Downstate as Pal Pal} was a long time IL Secretary of State in the fifties and sixties. After he died, his executor found innumerable shoeboxes stuffed with money in his appartment at the St. Nick hotel. Since that time references to "shoeboxes" has been a running joke in IL politics. Sorry if the reference was obscure. I assume the Il folks who visit here got it though.
