NATION WOEBEGON, WHERE EVERY ETHNICITY IS BELOW AVERAGE:

Song in a minority key (SALIM MANSUR, 1/07/06, Toronto Sun)

Paul Martin insists "Canada is a nation of minorities," and that only his Liberal party can defend this nation's minorities from some bullying majority.

I have never understood how, if Canada is a nation of minorities, can there then be some malevolent "majority" within this nation that needs to be kept at bay? Who is this scheming majority against whom the rest of us minorities must remain ever vigilant in protecting our rights?

No. This story presents a serious issue.

In a modern state of any size, there is a folkish spirit. Quite to the contrary of German and even of 19th Century American thought, this spirit is most definitely not racial, although at a given point in time it may coincidentially correlate to this or that ethnicity. Rather the spirit is cultural: language, history, tradition, law, custom, family, economics, and, yes, religion.

When a multiculturalist speaks of "majorities" and "minorities" as in the above Canadian article, what he means is "folkish" and "unfolkish." Thus, to the multiculturist, the outsider, the stranger, the outcast, is always the "minority," to be protected against everyone else, and therefore the minority culture is to be preferred in every case.

Now when individual members of ethnic minority groups begin to adopt the majority culture, becoming, as it were, "praying Indians," the entire scheme falls apart. This is why we hear of individuals attacked as "Uncle Toms" or whatever name separatists hurl at those who don't buy into a life of resentment and hate. It is not that the minorities gang up with one another, but that they voluntarily become part of Cananda, or of the United States.

Some minorities are more minor than others.

The only real minority in Canada is stout hearted men.

Robert,

"Start me with ten, who are stout-hearted men and I'll soon give you ten thousand more." h/t The New Moon lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II.

Surely there are at least ten up there who will stand up and be counted?
