Republicans calling for elections to replace DeLay (Reuters, 1/06/06)

About two dozen Republicans have promised to sign a petition calling for elections to permanently replace Rep. Tom DeLay as majority leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, aides said on Friday.

"We have commitments for about 25 signatures. The letter calls for a leadership election for a permanent majority leader," said Matthew Specht, a spokesman for Rep. Jeff Flake (news, bio, voting record), a conservative Arizona Republican.

Fifty House Republican signatures are needed to call elections, which would occur after the House reconvenes on January 31.

The GOP has been admirably ruthless since it regained the majority in cutting loose leaders who become liabilities. Democrats just keep following theirs.

novak has a good column today, about dem's being unhappy with pelosi but not having much say in the matter.

Isn't that the whole problem with Democrats? They're just party liners who say and do what they're told.

Harold Ford tried to lead a 'revolt' after the 2002 losses - he was neutered. Steny Hoyer can't stand Pelosi, but she is their leader because she can raise money in CA. Reid could raise it in NV. If Torricelli had been a bit more polished, he might have been in line to replace Daschle as Minority Leader. Durbin probably wouldn't replace Reid, but I'll bet Schumer might try.

They're a sorry bunch.

Both sides of the aisle are a sorry bunch.

If Frist goes, who replaces him? I really can't think of a single Republican senator who'd do better. Certainly not a return to Lott.

Hastert seems to doing a fine, if low key job, with the congress critters. Now that Delay has agreed to step down as majority leader, I think the case against him will be dismissed.

Rove's deft hand?

McConnell would do fine as leader, as would Liddy Dole.
