AND LE BAND PLAYED ON (via Ali Choudhury):

Canada's group sex club patrons swinging free (Robert Melnbardis Mon Dec 26, 2005, Reuters)

On a recent night out on the town, Michel and Chantal Delbecchi left their suburban Montreal home and drove to the L'Orage Club in the city's east end, where they had sex with a couple they had never met before.

The Delbecchis, husband and wife since 1978, are "echangistes," French for "swingers," who for the past 21 years have been visiting clubs like L'Orage (Thunderstorm) to have consensual sex in a group with one or more other people. [...]

The ruling sparked outrage, largely in English-speaking parts of Canada, where critics said it would erode limits on indecency or obscenity, encourage prostitution and even contribute to the corruption of minors.

In the mainly French-speaking and predominantly Catholic province of Quebec, however, the decision caused barely a ripple of adverse reaction. Newspaper editorialists fumed in Toronto, but largely yawned in Montreal.

Swingers across Canada cheered the ruling, especially those in Quebec, where adherents go to clubs not only to meet others like them, but also to have sex on the premises.

As suggested yesterday, David Warren doesn't belong in a nation that's fundamentally French.

Meanwhile, sex clubs have been perfectly legal in flinty, stoic New Hampshire for years. Fancy a trip to The Secret Chalet in Hillsboro anyone? When Quebec is less French than your state, you've got bigger problems than what goes on north of the border.

I simply don't understand why the process of secularization in Catholic societies is so extreme and debased. This abomination is just one example. Ever seen the in-your-face porn in Italian railway stations? Murderous anti-clericalism in Mexico and Spain in the early 20th century? Resentment of priestly control and severity is all well and good, but its not like most Protestants grew up with respectful, easy-come-easy-go ministers.

Legal in NH Bryan? Ever been to one?

Nope, I'm not married and thus couldn't "swing" as the word is traditionally defined. Plus, it sounds like a lot of pudgy, pale men and doughy, unnatractive women rutting in dim rooms. Yecch.
Really, I just wanted to tweak Orrin's nose that such scurrilous behavior happens in perfect perfect New Hampshire.

Peter,
Protestants can fire their ministers if they don't like them. In countries where clerical and governmental authority went hand in hand, which included those Catholic countries you cited, religion and the rules that it stood for were discredited by the inevitable corruption of church authorities and abuses of power.

I'm not sure that Ireland and Poland follow the same example. But as we mentioned in other threads, sexual decadence is going pretty strong in America as well.

there is a documentary about swinging in the U.S. and it's pretty funny. almost everyone filmed is 50+ and looking the worse for wear. maybe there is an elite group of swingers that looks hot but i doubt it. maybe peter could do a little scouting of the canadian clubs mentioned :)

I wondered about that email problem. Every time I post I get a message saying that my email was undeliverable. Then when I come to the website I see my posting right where it should be. No idea why this is happening. The only thing I can see is that maybe OJ has the site set to give him an email whenever there is a posting and that email is what is undeliverable. I know Ann Althouse has her website set up so that she gets an email everytime anyone posts. Maybe that is the problem.

That's exactly what's going on. Sorry.

In Washington State you can hold interspecies group sex orgies in private clubs as long as no one smokes.

How would you like it if the Delbecchis were your parents?
