THE WAGES OF UNILATERALISM:

Pakistan-Israel in landmark talks (BBC, 9/01/05)

The foreign ministers of Pakistan and Israel have for the first time held publicly acknowledged talks.

After the talks Pakistan's foreign minister said that his country had decided to "engage" with Israel after Israel's withdrawal from Gaza.

Israel's foreign minister described the talks, held in the Turkish city of Istanbul, as a "historic meeting".

Pakistan has emphasised that the meeting does not mean the recognition of the state of Israel.

"Pakistan attaches great importance to Israel ending its occupation of Gaza," Pakistani Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri said at a news conference after the talks.

"We see this development as the beginning of the process of [ending] Israeli occupation and establishing a Palestinian state living side by side with Israel in peace and security," he said.

Pakistan has emphasized that the meeting does not mean the recognition of the state of Israel.

This statement is particularly malodorous and hypocritical given that Pakistan was forcibly taken from India and "given" to Muslims so they could have a state of their own. Perhaps it would be useful for Israel to declare that these talks do not mean the recognition of the state of Pakistan which has far less legitimate title to their land than does Israel to Gaza and the other disputed territories.

It's curse to have even a modicum of historical perspective. Better for ones mental and physical health to induce both long and short term memory loss and just go back to re-reading the classics and forget about world affairs.

Living side by side sounds like recognition to me.

This the result of Mossad and ISI cooperation which resulted in Iraq War. Perhaps Iran next! For Pakistan Mushy needs a facelift after July 7th and after 9/11 promises undelivered about fighting terrorists -they are back in Afganistan.

Finally, at long last, Israel has gained non-recognition by one of the most--if not the most---corrupt and dysfunctional and murderous regime(s) in the world.

Quite an achievement, that.
