IF W HAD BEEN PRESIDENT DURING WWII THEY'D HAVE WRITTEN FOR THE VOLKISCHER BEOBACHTER:

Coming Soon to Satellite: Al-Jazeera, In English (Eric Weiner, August 2, 2005, Day to Day)

The Arab satellite news channel -- known to many Americans as the station that airs statements of Osama bin Laden -- will soon launch an English-language network. Al-Jazeera executives are hoping that Americans will tune in, out of curiosity if nothing else. However, the network has obstacles to overcome, including its image in the United States.

Heard this a few hours ago and have a spotty short-term memory in the best of circumstances, but the story seriously begins something like this: You may find it hard to believe that any American journalist would be willing to work for the notorious al-Jazeera network but they've been inundated with applications.

Yeah, shocking...

Those who go there with the idea that, even more than the BBC or CNN International, this will be a news network that doesn't have to bow to concerns in Britian or the U.S. may find there are different issues they have to deal with, in terms of their world/lifestyle view outside of a basic dislike of the current policies of Bush and/or Blair. But odds are many of those same people will be willing to curb their beliefs in areas where they conflict with Islam in order to maintain their on-air positions and the ability to get the message out about the wrongness of current actions.
