MARGINALIA:

French happy, but wary (PRANAY SHARMA, 7/23/05, The Telegraph of India)

France is happy the US is finally ready to accept India as a responsible nuclear state — a line it claims the French leadership has been advocating for seven years. But it is not sure if the growing Indo-US ties will be at its expense and reduce France to being a marginal player in the subcontinent.

Why would the subcontinent be any different than the rest of the world?:

France was reduced to being a marginal player on the sub-continent by the French and Indian War.

The French were the dominant European players in India for about a century. But all they have to show for it is the occasional restaurant named 'Pondicherry.' The impact of the French in India is even smaller.

My bet is old Pranay Sharma is some upper-caste deracinated Brahmin, like Nehru, who spent some time in Oxbridge and developed a belief in the superiority of all things Continental, so he could go home and lord it over his neighbors.

France has been having a prestige deficit of late. That's like Kieran Chetry having a beauty deficit.

So, anything like this that boosts France's self-esteem will reduce its need to do more stupid things internationally to get attention in future .

Kiran Chetry has a 'beauty deficit?' She's my ultimate news babe.
