CAUTION, FROST HEAVES:

Frost Drops Out of Race for DNC Chairman (WILL LESTER, 2/01/05, Associated Press)

Former Texas Rep. Martin Frost dropped out of the race for Democratic national chairman on Tuesday, winnowing the field to front-runner Howard Dean and three challengers.

Frost's decision came hours after AFL-CIO leaders decided not to make an endorsement in the race for Democratic National Committee chairman.

Frost had counted heavily on organized labor to give him a boost and many in the AFL-CIO were prepared to back him at one point, but Frost had not shown the strength in the race to get an endorsement, union officials said.

The former congressman said he called Dean and ``congratulated him for running a strong campaign.''

David Leland, former chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party, dropped out earlier in the day.

David Leland, former chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party, dropped out earlier in the day.

This would be the same David Leland who actually considered drafting Jerry Springer to run for governor (against Bob Taft) in '02, or senate (against George Voinovich) this last time around.

Sheesh! No wonder Dean's a shoe-in--he has no competition.

Springer's stump speech beats the tar out of Edwards's. He'd be a great Democratic candidate in a state where a liberal can win. Not OH.

Mike Morely: Yes it is. And I am very glad that he did drop out. Not that I care a fig for the fate of the Democrat Party. ("The Party's Over, It's time to Call it a Day") But his lovely wife, of whom, I am very fond, is the cantor of our synagogue, and it would have upset the congregation terribly to have lost her.
