NO SUCH THING:

Blessed anti-Nazi cardinal (Uwe Siemon-Netto, 12/20/04, UPI)

The Vatican cleared the way Monday for the first German clergyman to be beatified for his courageous opposition against Nazi mass murder.

In the presence of Pope John Paul II, the Congregation for Causes of Saints promulgated a decree linking a miracle to Cardinal Clemens August Count von Galen (1978-1946) who in 1941 publicly denounced Hitler's euthanasia program.

Under this policy, some 70,000 retarded and incurably ill Germans were murdered - or "given the coup de grace," as the Nazis called this euphemistically.

On Aug. 3, 1941, von Galen thundered from the pulpit of St. Lambert's church in Muenster, which was his see:

"Woe to men, woe to our German people, if God's holy Commandment, 'Thou shalt not kill,' is not only disobeyed but if this transgression is also tolerated and goes unpunished."

Revered by faithful Catholics and Protestants alike as "the Lion of Muenster," this tall scion of one of Germany's oldest noble families will probably be beatified during the pope's visit at the World Youth Day in Cologne in August next year. [...]

Before delivering one of the most powerful sermons in 20th-century Germany, he instructed one of his priests to take a change of clothing to prison should he be arrested.

As it turned out, this did not become necessary because the Gestapo, Hitler's secret police, feared that the whole province of Westphalia would refuse to participate in the war effort should the Nazis lay hands on this popular prelate.

"After the war we'll break the churches' backs and get rid of the bishop of Muenster in the process," declared propaganda minister Josef Goebbels.

As Ms Siemon-Netto goes on to note, the beatification has resonance today as the struggle against Applied Darwinism continues.

He had the 'courage' to rail against the euthanasia of the unfit and lacked the courage to rail against the massacre of 6 million Jews, the vast majority of whom were fit. Don't waste my time.

Bart:

The Jews were exterminated because of "fitness"

Posted by: oj at December 22, 2004 3:10 PM

It's like looking in a mirror, huh, Bart?

So, Bart, as far as exterminating the "unfit," you're down with that, eh?

At least my views make economic and utilitarian sense and were standard American policy before WWII.(see Skinner v Oklahoma)

The broader point is that the Catholic Church was able to raise a stink about the mistreatment of the mentally defective and were able to compel the Nazis to stop killing them. Thus, the notion that had they raised a stink about killing the Jews of Europe, it would have had no effect on things and only made things worse for the Catholic Church and for Jews is absurd on its face. THe Church failed to raise a stink about killing the Jews of Europe because the Church supported the killing of the Jews of Europe, as is evidenced by the roles of people like Msgr. Tiso and Cardinal Stepinac.

Bart:

Anti-Semitism too was popular before WWII, so by your standard is hunky dory. Only the Church did anything serious about the Holocaust while it was occurring, which is why Pius was so honored by post-War Jewish leaders. You've an unfortunate tendency to swallow hook, line, and sinker the nonsense that New Dealers wrote to justify the way they butchered WWII, exonerating Stalin and villifying Franco, the Pope, etc..

Mike:

As is always the case, he supports exterminating the unfit then insists others had the wrong standard of fitness when it included him.

Posted by: oj at December 23, 2004 8:37 AM

At least my definition of 'unfit' has some basis in facts and logic not superstition and racialist mumbo-jumbo. The Nazis and their allies had a view that made no rational sense whatsoever.

Posted by: Bart at December 23, 2004 10:23 AM

Yes, exterminatinig Jews is baseless and irrational, but exterminating Muslims is based on cold reality that only you are brave enough to recognize and for which you must fight.

Maybe you should write a book about your battle.

Bart:

The Nazis appear to have been correct about fitness, how else explain the 6 million? Were Jews "fitter" they'd have been working the ovens.

Posted by: oj at December 23, 2004 12:21 PM

David,

Stephen Emerson, Jean Raspail and Samuel Huntington already have more than justified any position I take regarding the Muslims. We are in a war to preserve our culture whether we like it or not, and our Muslim enemy will stop at nothing to destroy us. We therefore must take strong, draconian steps to survive.

OJ,

And just how has German science been since 1933? Do yourself a favor look at who gets Nobels in the Sciences and who's on the Forbes Billionaires list and then come back to me about 'fitness.' OK.

Posted by: Bart at December 24, 2004 8:27 AM

Bart:

Fitness doesn't require prizes.

Posted by: oj at December 24, 2004 8:31 AM

They are the standard of how scientific excellence is judged.

Posted by: Bart at December 24, 2004 9:43 AM

Bart: The "Muslims", whoever they are, can't possibly threaten our "culture", whatever that is.

The Islamicists, a very small group of people, are trying to kill as many Americans as they can. We need to hunt them down and kill them first. But vastly overstating the number of enemies we have is not brave or fearless, it's just wrong. There are, maybe, 20,000 Islamicists actively fighting against us. There's no point in trying to inflate that into a couple of billion enemies.

Posted by: David Cohen at December 25, 2004 9:51 PM

David,

Muslims have killed literally millions of people for religious reasons from East Timor and Sudan to Norway and the US. If it's only 20,000 or so people doing the killing, it's a heck of a kill ratio and maybe our Spec Forces ought to learn from them.

Posted by: Bart at December 26, 2004 11:14 AM

Bart:

Millions? That's absurd.

Posted by: oj at December 26, 2004 11:20 AM

The death toll in East Timor alone since 1974 is about 300,000. The population butchered or enslaved in Sudan since the 60s is in the millions. I'm not even counting Muslim massacres of Hindus during the late 40s in India.

Posted by: Bart at December 26, 2004 11:54 AM

Those are wars. It's like saying we killed 2 million Buddhists in Vietnam.
