THE COMMON TOUCH (via David Cohen):

No Assault Rifle for Kerry, After All (JODI WILGOREN, 9/27/04, NY Times)

Senator John Kerry's campaign said yesterday that Mr. Kerry did not own a Chinese assault rifle, as he was quoted as saying in Outdoor Life magazine, but a single-bolt-action military rifle, blaming aides who filled out the magazine's questionnaire on his behalf for the error.

Here's the thing, someone on the Kerry campaign thinks it's better for him to be seen as the kind of guy who mistakes a flintlock, or whatever they're pretending it is now, for an assault rifle than the kind of guy who keeps his favorite gun in defiance of a government ban.

I knew he was making this crap up. Also one more example of what a loathsome man the Senator is, pawning off yet another gaffe onto his subordinates. Why would anyone want to work for this guy?

Kerry does not own a Chinese assault rifle ... it belongs to the family.

I dunno; how do supervillains find a steady supply of henchmen to carry out their stupid plans?

Brian - this may not be the answer but some of the people I know from high school and college who have ended up working in DC (and were nice people) would probably now throw their mother over a cliff to get ahead in DC. Seems to be something in the water there. I remember a blogger writing, back during the Dem primaries, that the campaign staffers all have visions of the being the next Sam Seaborn or Josh Lyman (or insert favorite West Wing character here) and are willing to put up with this stuff to get there.

does anybody actually watch/watched the west wing/ i found the show to be loathsome.

Another screw up by a staffer who answered a question without knowing the answer? Why just last week, Mrs. Heinz Kerry said -- after her cookie recipe was soundly trounced by Mrs. Bush's recipe -- that it wasn't her recipe after all, but sent in by a staffer. By the way, the THK recipe was for pumpkin spice cookies....yech!

Who in their right minds thinks that either THK or the First Lady cook or bake ?

It would be a better contest if both of them recommended their favorite restaurants, and then food critics decided who had better taste.

I heard that the rifle was a souvenir from Vietnam, taken from the Viet Cong. Or was it the rifle he used while fighting for the Viet Cong while he was in Cambodia? I can see why he would try to hide its identity.

"pumpkin spice cookies"? Sounds almost too good to be true. For real yech, try peanut butter and jelly cake. I kid you not.
