Syria 'to seal' border with Iraq (BBC, 9/29/04)

The US says Syria has agreed to tighten its border with Iraq to prevent militants from crossing the border. [...]

The US seems to have achieved its aim of moving on from political promises to specific practical measures Syria has agreed to take, the BBC's State Department correspondent Jill McGivering reports.

This follows directly from an apparent breakthrough last week at a meeting between Mr Powell and the Syrian foreign minister, our correspondent says.

Washington may feel it has some real leverage at the moment on Damascus, which currently appears particularly isolated, with new UN pressure over its presence in Lebanon, analysts say.

Yet another example of how we're "losing the war on terror" eh? :)

Oh, I get it, it was pressure from the UN, on Lebanon, that caused Syria to act.

Hmmmm, Syria is making the same plea I am.

Bush deserves all the credit for this apparent advance in the war on terror.

Assad has a difficult balancing act. Syrian adventurism in Lebanon stretched its limited resources to the limit. His Iranian sugar daddies are at their limit with causing trouble through their catspaw, al-Sadr, in Iraq, and because of the increasing expense of preserving domestic tranquility. Putin is telling him to 'talk to the hand.'

The Saudis are listening to their PR people in the US and understand that continued Saudi support for terror states and groups will result in the Saudi royal family being put on 'double secret probation' as far as American support is concerned. Even the inbred, brain-dead, alcohol-besotted, psychopathic Saudi royal family understand that if it were not for American military support there'd be no more trips to Monte Carlo and Marbella, and they;d be reduced to running the camel rides at the children's zoo in Central Park.

I've been following Syria as of late and have posted a timeline of the events in the last month w.r.t Syria and it's withdrawal. Two posts, one is simply a chronology of headlines and dates, the other explores a little more.

Thius Sat, Oct 2nd is when Kofi Annan is supposed to report to the security council about Syria's withdrawal from Lebanon. The partial withdrawal takes them down to 15k troops in Lebanon.

The current (this week) wisdom seems to be that if we flip or destroy Assad, then Iran will be totally isolated.

Which might be just what the doctor ordered: according to several Iranian websites, there are riots going on across the country right now, inspired by calls from some ex-pat here in the US.

Kerry will be walking the tightrope on Iran and NK tonight, because his party claims that sweetness and light will win the day. And yet these are the worst characters left on stage, and most Americans know it. Time to hang Clinton, Albright, Berger, Gary Sick, and Jimmy himself right around Kerry's neck.
