House votes to end D.C. gun ban: Bill's supporters cite 2nd Amendment rights; city officials fear rise in crime (Jim Abrams, AP, Chicago Tribune, 9/30/04)

The House voted Wednesday to end a 28-year ban on handgun ownership in the nation's capital, brushing aside pleas from city officials concerned about a surge in violence and more heavily armed criminals.

"The District of Columbia handgun ban has failed. It has failed miserably," said Rep. Mark Souder (R-Ind.), sponsor of the bill that passed 250-171.

It is unlikely the Senate will take up the measure this year. . . .

"This is absolutely crazy," said Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), whose husband was killed and son wounded in 1993 by a gunman on a Long Island Rail Road train.

We may be stupid, but we're not crazy. This, on the other hand, is brilliant.

If Ms. McCarthy's son or husband had a gun on them, they would probably alive today.

How low does your IQ have to be not to get that?

I think the question these days is how high does your IQ have to be not to get that.

Rep. McCarthy's husband was killed and her son was shot in a part of the United States that effectively makes owning firearms extremely difficult and bars the carrying of firearms by all but a select few. This is why her husband and son were shot by an individual who went to California to illegally purchase the handgun. He did it with a New York driver's license while giving a hotal as his local address. How's that for a quality background check? (If Rep. McCarthy had any sense she should have sued the local authorities in CA for not doing their duty.)

The individual then illegally carried the gun onto the train to commit a hate crime in a target rich environment: a large number of helpless people in a confined space who are forbidden by law to carry any effective tools for self-defense.

Gun control provides a very valueable function in our society: it protects violent predators as they commit their crimes. This keeps a frightened and dependent population voting for more government spending, inparticular, bigger budgets for police departments. Gun control is supported by most police unions, chiefs of police, and criminals who leggally or illegally vote.

At some point doesn't Ms McCarthy have do something other than stand on the corpses of her family members?

If the racist nut-case who shot up the Long Island commuter train had tried that stunt on the Trenton Local into Philadelphia, he would have looked like Michael Corleone in the tollbooth scene in The Godfather. Seriously, plenty of suits from the burbs pack when they go into town. I always did. I wholeheartedly concur that most of the the L.I. deaths were the result of gun-grabbing, not of guns.

Did Sonny Corleone die in vain?

Has knowledge of the Classics passed away?
