Obama, Keyes meet at parade for 1st time (NATASHA KORECKI, 8/16/04, Chicago Sun-Times)

The two candidates for Illinois' vacant U.S. Senate seat met face-to-face for the first time Sunday in an exchange that exhibited some measureable tension.

State Sen. Barack Obama and his Republican opponent, former presidential candidate Alan Keyes, crossed paths on Chicago's North Side at the Indian Independence Day Parade. [...]

"The sad truth of the matter is, one test of a candidate, I believe, is that you say what you mean and mean what you say," Keyes said in an apparent reference to Obama now committing to only three debates instead of the six he had sought before Jack Ryan withdrew as the GOP candidate.

"I always do," Obama shot back.

Mr. Obama needs to pretend that his challenger doesn't exist, not elevate him.
