Veep Watch (Dotty Lynch, Douglas Kiker, Beth Lester, Clothilde Ewing, Cody Kucharczyk, Nathaniel Franks and Dan Furman, 6/16/04, CBS News)

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson told the AP that he is "not interested" in being vice president. Richardson is in Tokyo wrapping up a trade mission and said that he is "very happy being governor of New Mexico," but that he will "help Sen. Kerry in his campaign."

If he's serious, or if he's saying it because he's already been disqualified by the Kerry people, this is very bad news for the Democrats. Mr. Richardson is one of the only prospective candidates who could carry his own state, help with a core constituency, and, most importantly, be a good president.

No foreign policy experience at all in a time of war ain't gonna cut the mustard against either Dick Cheney or Condi Rice.

Seven words: Vice-Presidential Candidate and Former Vice-President Al Gore.

Kerry-Gore in '004!!!

At least it rhymes.

And in '008, when they nominate St.Hilary, the Dems can save money by recycling all those old "Clinton-Gore" posters and bumperstickers, too. And as a bonus Algore will get to equal Nixon and F.Roosevelt's record for running for national office five times, although the other two would have more wins.

Raoul: She'd sooner have them burned first. It's Rodham-Gore or nothing.

If he's at all serious, Breaux would be every bit the asset that Richardson was, if not moreso.

I don't care what Kerry *wants* in a VP candidate. What he's actually going to *get* is somebody whose political fortunes are so low they can't get any lower and/or someone who has nothing better to do for the next few months than participate in an obviously doomed endeavor.

I assume the message here is that Richardson believes he has a future and that Kerry does not. Ditto Bayh Jr. Kerry's only choices will be has been's like Gephardt and Edwards. Forget Hillary, she will not be wanting to take one for the team. She knows there is no I in team but there is a me.
