Contreras's Wife, Daughters Leave Cuba (THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, 6/22/04)

Jose Contreras' family defected from Cuba this week, and the New York Yankees pitcher left the team Tuesday and traveled to Miami to reunite with his wife and two daughters.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Barbara Gonzalez said she did not know details on how the family got out of Cuba. A call to U.S. Border Patrol officials was not immediately returned.

"It's spectacular news,'' Yankees manager Joe Torre said before Tuesday night's game at Baltimore.

Wife Miriam, 11-year-old Naylan and 3-year-old Naylenis were taken by the border patrol to immigration offices, where they were interviewed and released.

After being examined by Miami-Dade County medical officials, they left with Contreras' agent, Jaime Torres, early Tuesday evening. [...]

"Thanks to God, they are free,'' Torres said.

Amen, brother.

If he hadn't stolen my job, I could be pitching for the Yankees.

Yaaay! It's Miller Time!

Even OJ, who believes the Yankees have taken up where the Soviets left off ("focus of evil in the modern world," etc.), has apparently found some joy in this news.

Myself, I think it's high time we send some men to Cuba and ice the sorry bearded bastard. As long as we're on a "fanatical," "imperialist" binge, let's make the most of it. We've got some cockroaches in the world just begging to be stepped on.

Yes, it is nice to see this, especially for the children. However, what kind of man leaves his family in a brutal dictatorship just for money? All these Cuban baseball defectors bug me, always have. They say they flee for freedom but they always make sure they go to Central America first so they are not subject to the minor league draft but can auction their skills to the highest bidder.

Bob: that's freedom.

Bob - If David had thought of that Central American trick, he could have just missed pitching for the Red Sox.
