Sen. Miller to Speak at GOP Convention (Jeffrey McMurray, AP, 6/25/04)

Georgia Sen. Zell Miller, the highest profile Democrat to endorse President Bush for re-election, will speak at the Republican National Convention later this summer, a congressional aide said Friday. . . .

Miller drew a sharp rebuke from the dean of the state's congressional delegation, Democratic Rep. John Lewis, who called the senator's decision "a shame and a disgrace." . . .

"I think he has sold his soul for a mess of pottage," said Lewis, in a reference to a speech Miller gave as a congressional candidate 40 years ago in which he argued that President Johnson was "a Southerner who sold his birthright for a mess of dark pottage" because of his support for the Civil Rights Act.

Pottage is defined as a thick soup or stew of vegetables.

This article illustrates the meaning of "mess", too.

Good news but like the African Americans at the 2000 GOP convention (and Powell, Rice, and Paige now) this will be dismissed as pandering or not covered at all.

"Pottage" is vegetarian stew? Well, now that old saying makes sense.

"Mess of pottage" is a reference to the story of Jacob and Esau, sons of Isaac and Rebekah. See Genesis 25:19-33:20,particularly 25:29-34.

Yes, but remember that this is the same media that is convinced that "city on a hill" came from Reagan, or maybe some Puritan, and that "let justice flow like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream" originated with MLK.

I laughed out loud when I saw the word pottage defined but not what the reference means. I don't know if the reporter really didn't know it was biblical, or just wouldn't go there.

I would say that even John Lewis has sold his soul to the anti-American left, as exemplified by John F. Kerry. And if GA elects Herman Cain to the Senate, then John might as well retire, because Herman will tell him so publicly.
