LIKE TRYING TO THROW A LAMBCHOP PAST A WOLF:

NOW's Woman Problem (NY Times, 9/14/03)

By racing to assist Ms. Braun's candidacy, the leaders of NOW showed loyalty to someone with a long relationship with the organization, going back to the unsuccessful struggle to enact the Equal Rights Amendment. But they also trivialized the important role women will play in the coming election, and made themselves look silly to boot.

NOW trivial? Boy, you can't sneak anything past the Times, can you.

It's still not as silly as the "one grope rule" NOW's leadership torturously came up with do defend Clinton during the Lewinsky scandal. But in that case, the Times would have been perfectly willing to twist and turn along with them to justify something that the NOW people used to run Bob Packwood out of town on a rail a few years earlier.

I suppose Ms. Braun can be quickly jettisoned when Hilary Clinton throws her hat in the ring for the good of the country. The Times will then be able to congratulate NOW for their political maturity and realism. NOW is NOW after all but who is sillier than the New York Times?
