CHAOS CALLS INTO QUESTION AMERICA'S WAR, NATION'S FUTURE:

Rowdy Gophers fans get out of control after hockey victory (Bill McAuliffe, April 13, 2003, Star Tribune)
Thousands riot after big loss: Pepper gas used; 90 people arrested (Concord Monitor, Apr 14, 2003)

Brings to mind Imus' comment last week when the first riots started: "We said we would bring democracy to Iraq, and we did - we turned Baghdad into Detroit."

I have a friend who was downtown in the midst of the riots here in MN. What with the setting of fires, smashing of light fixtures, and various wanton acts of destruction without even the excuse of "I'm taking back what's mine from the Baathists," his description reminded me of this very thing. If this is the most chaos Iraq can come up with (and I don't know that it is), I think democracy there will be just fine.

It is interesting that Le Bon's work on "The

Crowd" is sometimes denounces as

fascist.

Only people who live in quiet communities

where riots have been unknown for

generations (there are many) would think

so.

My first professional riot was a college one.
