YA GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY:

Daily Philosophical Quotation (2/11/03)
If the question is asked, what are the most intelligent and all-round-capable things on earth, the answer is obvious: human beings. Everyone knows this, except certain religious people. A person is certainly a believer in some religion if he thinks, for example, that there are on earth millions of invisible and immortal nonhuman beings which are far more intelligent and capable than we are. But that is exactly what sociobiologists do think, about genes. Sociobiology, then, is a religion: one which has genes as its gods.

Weird. I swear, I was reading this very essay last night, as well as a few other of Stove's. He is an oddity, an atheist who doubts Darwin, natural selection, and sociobiology.

I've never understood how one could be a skeptic and not doubt them all.

Unfortunately, most popularizations of genes imbue them with things like the "will to survive."

Genes have no will, no forethought, no tactical plan. They encode for physical structures which, in the case of the brain, can have non-physical (i.e., mental) consequences.

The genes all living things have are the ones that made it through Nature's comb filter.

Note the author said "... there are on earth millions of invisible and immortal nonhuman beings which are far more intelligent and capable than we are. But that is exactly what sociobiologists do think
, about genes."

Notice he didn't use the word "say," since sociobiologists would never say such a thing, since they don't think it.

The author has done nothing more than set up a straw man.

Sincerely,

Jeff Guinn

Jeff:

We are survival machines - robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes. This is a truth which still fills me with astonishment.

"Programmed" ?
