Botched vaccinations blamed for Aids in Africa: An international team of scientists says only 30 per cent of HIV cases were sexually transmitted (Nigel Hawkes and Michael Dynes, February 20, 2003, Times of London)
THE African Aids pandemic was caused more by careless use of needles in healthcare than by unsafe sex, a report published today by an international group of scientists says.

They estimate that more than half the cases of Aids in Africa before 1988 were caused by unsterilised needles. The claim, directly challenging the belief that 90 per cent of cases were sexually transmitted, implies that the African Aids pandemic is largely the result of unsafe medical practices and mismanaged vaccination campaigns.

Thus does political correctness blind science. Posted by Orrin Judd at February 19, 2003 10:38 PM

Dare I ask which NGO(s) oversaw the vaccination campaigns?

Could some be tied to a certain building in NY?

I read the full article.

There are important objections to theory since as said in the article, since Prof Roy Anderson (from my alta mater) said cohort studies indicated sexual behaviour and STD's to be the important risk factors.

And Dr Ouma's comments need to be read too.

Despite Orrin's skepticism, I find the concept entirely believable. I have a friend who was a missionary in Bolivia. On occasion, he would feel the need of an antibiotic injection. He flew to Peru to get them, since in Bolivia one hypodermic served for all.

My only surprise about this assertion would be that I would not have thought that so many Africans got any kind of injections in the '80s, but it is possible to organize such things even in a society living otherwise in the middle ages.

You misplace my skepticism. It's obviously almost impossible (if not impossible) for a male to contract AIDs via heterosexual sex, so there have to be other explanations for the pandemic in Africa. Needles seem a likely source.
