THEY'RE ALL JUST MAGGIE'S GET:

Bush's Third Term (Wall Street Journal, July 2, 2008)

Most Presidential candidates adapt their message after they win their party nomination, but Mr. Obama isn't merely "running to the center." He's fleeing from many of his primary positions so markedly and so rapidly that he's embracing a sizable chunk of President Bush's policy. Who would have thought that a Democrat would rehabilitate the much-maligned Bush agenda?

Everyone who pays any attention. In Britain the Tories rejected Thatcherism, leaving Tony Blair room to claim her mantle for Labour, until Gordon Brown tossed him over and David Cameron reclaimed the Third Way for the Tories. Likewise, in the US, GHWB allowed Bill Clinton to run to his Right but Al Gore forsook the Third Way and squandered an unlosable election climate. Election 2008 just boils down to which candidate is most like W (and Bill). It seems unlikely that will be the pro-death, isolationist, black nationalist, but he has to try. It obviously made more political sense to run Hillary as Bill's natural heir, but it took her way too long to figure that out.
