THE DOGS THAT NEVER BARK:

Blue Dogs look beyond '08 election (PATRICK O'CONNOR, 6/11/08, Politico)

Rep. Jim Cooper never misses a chance to talk about the federal government’s swelling financial obligations. But the Tennessee Democrat clams up when asked about a conversation he had on the topic with his party’s likely presidential nominee, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.

“I’ll let his campaign speak to his position on this issue,” Cooper says.

Cooper’s silence is understandable: Although the party that takes power next year will have to address deficit reduction and entitlement reform, those issues — especially when they involve painful changes to Social Security and Medicare — are too hot to touch during a presidential election campaign.

Having not helped W reform SS, they've lost what little credibility they had in the post-Clinton era.

Really? They will? They won't just kick the can down another few years?

If McCain is smart, he will indict the entire Democratic party with the jeers from their side of the aisle at Bush's State of the Union in 2006 (when he mentioned SS).

Tell the nation directly how unserious the Dems are about entitlement reform. And then see if Obama can answer even one question about it.

They are already sensitive - a week ago, I saw an Obama advisor on FOX fumble around and defensively state that Obama would not raise SS taxes (but of course, he loudly favors eliminating the ceiling on the tax, currently around $98,000).

Although the party that takes power next year will have to address deficit reduction ...

Income tax cut, capital gain tax cut, dividend tax cut will sunset from 2009 onwards. Deficit will be reduced for at least until the next mid term, and Democrats are going to take credit for that. Then after Obie gets his 2nd term, everyone, including the dead will realize that we are driven into a deep recession. Everyone will want state provide security. Obie will raise more taxes on the "rich" to get us out of the recession. The really rich have already transferred their wealth offshore, out of Obie's reach. You and me, those who earn a paycheck, have nowhere else to go. To paraphrase the Gipper: here we go again. Carter's 2nd and 3rd terms will turn us into Euro weenie-wanabes.

Why? The deficit is negligible.
