ALTHOUGH THERE IS NOT YET A FUND TO GIVE THE PROSECUTORS A KNUCKLE SANDWICH...

Swat somebody's butt, and yours belongs to the the D.A. (Mark Steyn, 7/28/07, Orange County Register)

Do you know Cory Mashburn and Ryan Cornelison?

If you do, don't approach them. Call 911 and order up a SWAT team. They're believed to be in the vicinity of McMinnville, Ore., where they're a clear and present danger to the community. Mashburn and Cornelison were recently charged with five counts of felony sexual abuse, and District Attorney Bradley Berry has pledged to have them registered for life as sex offenders.

Oh, by the way, the defendants are in the seventh grade.

Messrs Mashburn and Cornelison are pupils at Patton Middle School. They were arrested in February after being observed in the vestibule, swatting girls on the butt. Butt-swatting had apparently become a form of greeting at the school – like "a handshake we do," as one female student put it. On "Slap Butt Fridays," boys and girls would hail each other with a cheery application of manual friction to the posterior, akin to a Masonic greeting. [...]

[U]pon being caught butt-swatting, Mashburn and Cornelison were called to the principal's office, where they were questioned for several hours by vice principal Steve Tillery and McMinnville Police officer Marshall Roache. At the end of the afternoon, two boys who'd never been in any kind of trouble before were read their Miranda rights and led off in handcuffs to spend five days in juvenile jail.

Tough, but I guess they learned their lesson, right?

Ha! The state of Oregon was only warming up. After a court appearance in shackles and prison garb, the defendants were charged with multiple counts of felony sexual abuse, banned from school and forbidden any contact with their friends.

...There is, happily, a fund to help with legal expenses. As Mr. Steyn goes on to note, the families of these boys are in financial trouble due to legal fees but have so far refused a plea-bargain, instead opting to contest the charges. A guilty verdict could mean jail time and lifelong registration as sex offenders. According to Dennis Prager, you can make donations in the following manner:

BTW, even the majority liberals here think this is absurd.

I'd give odds this story will be on Bill O'Reilly and/or Hannity & Colmes on Monday.

Is it safe to tell the D.A. to kiss my a**? Or will that only get me charged for solicitation?

This is so ridiculous, I hate to even comment except the lives of these young boys are in danger. EVERYBODY...let's get real. What about all the other kids involved? It is just an early teenage gag!! Yes, they need to be spoken to about appropriateness, but ARRESTED???? Liberals.....go after something with substance!

Something is definitely wrong with the DAs in this country. First Nifong, now Berry. They don't care that their actions destroy lives. Is Oregon that peaceful that the DAs have nothing better to do, no harden criminals to prosecute? Clearly DA Berry has nothing better to do. May be it's time to let him go, to save taxpayers some money.

The ultimate villians here and the jurors. Back in the day, we declined prosecution on citizen shootings which were not technically justified because we knew juries in our county never convicted citizens who shot burglars, even if the burglar was shot in the South end going North, well outside the victinm's premises.

The problem here is that, for one thing, this is juvenile court, so no jury, and for another, we have been letting the piggies write out criminal law for the last 30 years. The intent elements of substantive criminal law which had protected against this sort of travesty have been slipping away. Felony sexual abuse? Given the social customs described in the article the acts shouod have been charged no higher than what we in Pennsylvania call disorderly conduct or harassment.

Give me a break. This is nearly as crazy as the prosecution. What we've got here is obviously a situation where the school authorities withdrew from enforcing any sort of control over student behavior. In addition to the DA, the entire school administrative bureaucracy needs to be fired.
