ON THE DEFENSIVE:

Byrd Replies to GOP Ad With Own Spot (LAWRENCE MESSINA, August 3, 2005,
The Associated Press)

Eight-term Democratic Sen. Robert C. Byrd has responded to a Republican ad criticizing his record by putting out his own spot that says the GOP commercial is false and misleading.

The West Virginia lawmaker has yet to announce that he will seek a ninth term in 2006. More than a year before the election, the National Republican Senatorial Committee already has begun showing an ad that assails Byrd for his votes against President Bush on national security and taxes.

When you're running for your ninth term you shouldn't have to start ads 15 months out.

NOBODY should be running for their ninth consecutive Senate term, period.

Maybe to save money and avoid boredom, they can re-run some of Sen. Byrd's commercials from past campaigns, though I would imagine those election spots from 1958 and 1964 might be a little problimatical these days...
