Thais try soccer to 'tame' Muslim youths (The Australian, August 17th, 2005)

Getting restless Muslim youths to watch more English Premier League soccer is the latest Thai Government initiative to quell an Islamic insurgency in the country's south, a key government minister said yesterday.

Under the plan, Thailand's Interior Ministry will bear the cost of installing 500 television sets at community tea and coffee shops, where cable operators will televise every English Premier League match. The commentary and narration will be in Yawi, the dialect of Muslims living in the restive area.

The ministry "will tame these young people, getting them to think of sports and watch the league on television rather than going out and killing people", Interior Minister Kongsak Wanthana told reporters.

"We are confident the league games will draw the attention of the young to the area of sports and they'll have no time to think of violence and causing trouble," Mr Kongsak, who is charged with national security, said.

What is really exciting is how this will be a cross-cultural bridge to like-minded Westerners.

The global Salafi jihadists in Thailand now plan their next attack in the tea and coffee shops.

When the government installs all those TV sets, jihadists will have to do their planning with that darned TV set droning on in the background.

That will slow planning down a lot!

Isn't this like that midnight basketball that was proposed for the inner cities under our previous President? Or am I confusing that with some other sappy plan to get kids off the street?

EPL: best sports league in the world.

And thanks to Fox Soccer Channel and Setanta USA one can watch 7 of the 10 gmes played each weekend.

Gotta love it.

No if we can just get more Americans to play soccer, they might not want to kill Middle-Easterners so much.

Oooh, snap!
Of course most of the soccer playing nations are are also the nations who support brutal regimes so I'll take baseball, democracy and a strong military over soccer, totalitarianism and appeasement, thanks.

But real nice smugness, though.

Walter, i don't think i've heard as ignorant a statement as that.
Per capita, Americans have slaughtered, directly or indirectly, more foreign peoples than any other nation since WWII.
Outside of America, soccer is the most popular sport in probably 75% of the countries in the world (rough estimate).
We have supported more brutal regimes than even the former Soviet Union. We have suppressed democracy in more countries than we have supported it.

The bureaucratic mind at work.

There's talk among elected leaders in Europe that in order to stay ahead of the population curve, they must counteract the rabbit-like reproduction of their Muslim invaders, by encouraging non-Muslim European women to start having lots of babies.

Is that brilliant, or what?

Dude, where's your intellect?

Kidding aside, we are all focussing on the humorous "soccer" element, and ignoring the fact that these "insurgencies" are popping up everywhere (coming to a French cafe near you).

It will soon become clear that the only way to really stop these types of "insurgencies" is to start giving non-Muslims guns & the physical & philosophical training to use them.

Since governments won't allow such an "arming" of the populace, the only solution is to form a NMRA (Non Muslim Republican Army) and start gun running.

This opens up whole new financial opportunities for the Militia movement & the American tourist industry.

It sounds funny, but it's not. Read Orrin's recent post about al Qaida strategy with a slightly pessimistic slant, and you are on just as solid grounds re: predictions as OJ is.

SOccer? I thought everyone knew that troubled youth need midnight basketball.

Did the eeevil United States kill more people than the good and honorable Soviet Union if you count domestic deaths as well?
And didn't wicked old George W. Bush say several times that Americas' support of tyrannts simply because they weren't Communists during the Cold War was unethical, impractical and caused more harm than good? When are you Liberals going to say that kow-towing towards Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, Castro, Hussein, the Taliban and on and on was as bad an idea? If you want to play "Whose ideology has more blood on its hands" I'm game, but I don't think you'll be very pleased with the results.

Since WWII, huh? We're lucky that's the test, or we wouldn't have a chance of winning.

But, yes, I suppose that if we ignore the Vietnamese, who slaughtered their own people, the Cambodians, who slaughtered their own people, the Rwandans, who slaughtered their own people, the Yugoslavians, who slaughtered their own people, the Syrians, who slaughtered their own people, the Iraqis, who slaughtered their own people, the Chinese, who slaughtered their own people, the Syrians, who slaughtered their own people, and the Sudanese, who slaughtered their own people, then we're pretty high up on the list.

Wow. The trolls are coming out in force this week. Is it the time of year when the do all the callups from the minor leagues?

Back during the heyday of Usenet, people used to bemoan the coming of September because that's when all the college kids came back to school and got their Internet connections back.

Per capita, Americans have slaughtered, directly or indirectly, more foreign peoples than any other nation since WWII.
Which is as good a theory as any about why the U.S. ended up being so head-and-shoulders above any other nation on Earth: We're so good at killing that eventually every other NATION learned not to poke us too hard. Posted by: Michael Herdegen at August 17, 2005 5:49 AM
