HILLARY'S PAL (via Jim Yates):

Tancredo talking White House bid: 'If no one else will take up this issue in the presidential campaign, then I will' (WorldNetDaily.com, July 9, 2005)

Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo told Iowa members of the Christian Coalition this week he will run for president in 2008 if no top-tier Republican candidate takes up his call for tougher enforcement of the nation's immigration laws.

"I'm here to get people to ask the question: What are you going to do about illegal immigration?" Tancredo told the Des Moines Register. "And if I can help elevate this issue to where it really does command the debate, I will have done my job.'

Tancredo, a Republican from suburban Denver, made stops in Cedar Rapids, Cedar Falls, Davenport and Dubuque, pushing for border control. The congressman is calling for placement of the military on the U.S.-Mexico border and repatriation of all undocumented immigrants back to their country of origin in an effort to save jobs for those in the U.S. legally.

The one plausible stumbling block to GOP domination of future Whie House races would be a nativist third party, which could easily siphon off all those angry ross Perot voters. Of course, all it would do is elect a Democrat president and make open immigration a certainty, but such movements aren't about achieving social ends, just stroking personal feelings.

Buchanan got .45% of the vote when he ran and he had $15 million of our money with which to campaign. In addition, he was well-known due to years of televised and printed bloviation.

Tancredo has far fewer assets should he run a campaign.

I never voted for Perot but Tancredo will be my choice.

I voted for Perot twice and it would take a real disaster of a race for me to vote for Tancredo.

bart, so we have you to thank for Clinton and the indifference, ignorance and appeasement that led to terrorism and the murder of innocents.

BTW - you're the first person I've ever come across who admitted voting for Perot.

The Father Judd did, though he also voted for John Anderson and Dick Gregory.

All Bush has to do to molify the Tancretins is put a little more bite in the 'fine' for current illegals and actually enforce it.

Though I agree with OJ on the balance of immigration working in the US favor, the issue is hot enough to protect the flank.

Even the Tancretins must know that we need to put in place a rational guest worker program.

It should include;

1. expanded LEGAL immigration that creates a path to citizen ship. (Tancretins need to be told that big walls and deportation would destroy many economic sectors including housing and auto)

2. Beefed up borders that actually DOES stop illegal immigration.

3. A "significant fine" for current illegals ($3000 [payable only through check reduction or lump sum - (this enforces tracking & funds the department)

If the fine is big enough and the teeth sharp enough, the Tancretins can declare that they "won" the issue. This is reasonable, given that they are 30% right. The current system is unsustainable.

They won't support legal immigration, they hate Latinos, not illegality.

That's "Comedian Dick Gregory", one of my favorite oxymorons. Or have media people finally figured out that he was only funny when he'd run his joke campaigns for President, and so they've finally dropped the "comedian" part?

If you're Black in Affirmative Action Amerika, and you claim to be a comedian, you don't have to be funny, or even intelligible.
