EV DIRKSEN LAUGHS (David Hill, The Bronx):

Pelosi questions US Republican tactics in CAFTA win (Reuters, 7/28/05)

The House of Representatives' top Democrat accused Republicans on Thursday of possibly illegal action to encourage some Democrats to vote for a free-trade pact with Central America.

The House voted 217-215 in favor of the U.S.-Central American Free Trade Agreement, or CAFTA, early on Thursday morning, with 15 Democrats joining 202 Republicans in support.

At a briefing hours later, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, complained that deals offered by House Republicans to win CAFTA made the House seem like the "set of 'Let's Make a Deal,"' referring to a TV game show.

Some Democrats were made offers that they said they didn't think "passed legal muster," Pelosi told reporters.

She refused to provide any details of who was involved and what was offered that might have been illegal. She also said the deals were hard to prove because they weren't consummated.

Nothing better encapsulates a permanent minority than whining about "fairness."

Nancy Pelosi and the word consummation in the same sentence - say it isn't so!

Just caught a few minutes of CNN where this is being treated as the greatest crime of the century with all sorts of Dem partisans lining up to proclaim the GOP as totalitarians for this vote. The Dems truly are not to be taken seriously anymore.

i am waiting for one of the more excitable dems to light themselves on fire or show up during a session with a bomb belt on.

I was fascinated by Orrin's notion that whining about "fairness" was a trait merely of Democratic minorities, and a token of their permanent minority status, so when I remembered my Nexis password I spent five minutes looking up Republican whinges from 1994:

8/18/94 Atlanta Constitution--

But Gingrich's office said criticizing the House Republican whip was unfair. "He doesn't disparage the objectives of social workers at all," said spokesman Tony Blankley. "All he said was, "When I call 911, I want a police officer, not a social worker.' "

Same day, Dallas News---
Minority Whip Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., said that it wasn't fair to single out Mr. Brooks, but what made the grant non-negotiable is that Democratic staff leaked the news to Lamar, which issued a news release before any member of the House had seen the bill.

"From the standpoint of the proprieties of the House virtually every House member is going to agree that that's just not tolerable," Mr. Gingrich said.

8/14/94 on the NewsHOur

Rep. NEWT GINGRICH: Well, they might be able to, with the 11 Republicans who voted yes, who sent a letter to the President asking him to be bipartisan - I don't think they can count on all 11 - a number of the Democrats who voted yes once- they're finding out back home it was an unpopular vote. I don't know that they're all going to vote yes again and it's just bad politics. I mean, here you've got a very liberal conference - people like Howard Metzenbaum and Charlie Schumer, way to the left of the country - they write a bad bill, the bill loses fair and square. I think it is grotesque to have, as one newspaper said, 'break arms and break noses' to get the vote through. I think that is very bad public policy.

----

Anyway, this is getting really boring, everyone knows Newt whined about Democratic "unfairness" all the time.

How'd Newt's career go? America hates whiners.
