COHEN?:

Face up to the truth: We all know who was to blame for Thursday's murders... and it wasn't Bush and Blair (Nick Cohen, July 10, 2005, The Observer)

I feel the appeal, believe me. You are exasperated with the manifold faults of Tony Blair and George W Bush. Fighting your government is what you know how to do and what you want to do, and when you are confronted with totalitarian forces which are far worse than your government, the easy solution is to blame your government for them.

But it's a parochial line of reasoning to suppose that all bad, or all good, comes from the West - and a racist one to boot. The unavoidable consequence is that you must refuse to support democrats, liberals, feminists and socialists in the Arab world and Iran who are the victims of Islamism in its Sunni and Shia guises because you are too compromised to condemn their persecutors.

Islamism stops being an ideology intent on building an empire from Andalusia to Indonesia, destroying democracy and subjugating women and becomes, by the magic of parochial reasoning, a protest movement on a par with Make Poverty History or the TUC.

Again, I understand the appeal. Whether you are brown or white, Muslim, Christian, Jew or atheist, it is uncomfortable to face the fact that there is a messianic cult of death which, like European fascism and communism before it, will send you to your grave whatever you do. But I'm afraid that's what the record shows.

The only plausible excuse for 11 September was that it was a protest against America's support for Israel. Unfortunately, Osama bin Laden's statements revealed that he was obsessed with the American troops defending Saudi Arabia from Saddam Hussein and had barely said a word about Palestine.

But most of the folks who were killed on 9-11 probably deserved it, since, being American, they were most likely pro-Israel?

"The only plausible excuse for 11 September was that it was a protest against America's support for Israel."

It wouldn't be an excuse, it would be a rationalization, one that would justify any atrocity as long as the perpetrators were open about it. That this Cohen guy thinks it would be a "plausible excuse" shows that he has more of a problem with the means than with the ends. If the jihadis would just tone it down a little, he could go back to supporting them.

As the professor Ward "Chief Running Mouth" Churchill patiently tried to explain it was because they were "little Eichmanns".

There's a Spectator editorial (sorry, no link) pointing out that more Britons were killed in the World Trade Center than in the London bombings.

I'll see Raoul and I'll raise him. When an offender states a motive which falls short of justification, what he does is admit to malice, and possibly premeditation.

For example, to say, as an accused recently did in the near suburbs, "I shot the M-F'er because he told a bad joke six years ago," is to admit all the elements of first-decree murder.

Let me reiterate that the law of war is quite clear on this. There is no bitter end/desparation defense to war crimes charges. If you cannot fight lawfully, you cannot fight.

It is edifying to see this and that pinko wake up to the realty that preserving racial quotas, baby-murder and queer proselytizing is less important than defending the world from a bunch of crazy ragheads.lobbying

That was also the rationalization for assassinating Bobby Kennedy. When we failed to excute Sirhan and his boss Arafat, a strong message was sent. A strong message of weakness.

Cohen is still somewhat wishy-washy but at least he's trying:

"There are many tasks in the coming days. Staying calm, helping the police and protecting Muslim communities from neo-Nazi attack are high among them. But the greatest is to resolve to see the world for what it is and remove the twin vices of wilful myopia and bad faith which have disfigured too much liberal thought for too long."

BTW, What are Coalition forces in Iraq doing?

A: Staying calm, helping the police and protecting Muslim communities from neo-Nazi attack.

What surprises me is that the people most likely to make the argument that the West is to blame for bringing the terrorist attacks down on themselves in most cases live and work in the exact areas most likely to be targeted by terrorists in any future attacks. There may be something in the back of their heads that rationalizes that if the West appeases them, or at least if the oh-so sophisticated people in target areas like New York or London show their empathy for the attackers' hatred of the West and sympathy with some of their anti-Western beliefs (at least when it comes to Israel) that they'll convince them to go someplace else to plant their bombs or fly their planes.

Not to mention removing the wilful myopia and bad faith which have disfigured too much Muslim thought for too long.

Lou:

No, the law of war is that if you can't fight by our rules we can punish you. If you just win you can fight any way you want. Stalin wasn't tried for war crimes.

Mr. Judd;

Yes, but sadly we no longer punish enemies who don't fight by our rules. In fact, as far as I can tell, we treat lawless enemies better than those who fight by our rules.

AOG:

The reality is that we've only very rarely punished any enemy, except in actual combat. One lesson of Iraq is to not try and fight such a bloodless war.
