THE LAST HOSTAGE GOES FREE:

Ted Koppel, the "Nightline" anchor and a 42-year veteran of ABC News, will leave the network in December.
Who even knew he was still there?

December? Why wait so long.

Why wait so long? So we can have nine months of "restrospectives" and other journalistc equivalents of the self-congratulatory victory lap.

And another thing Ted-- If you really are going, then, please, stay gone. Don't try to outdo third rate rock bands in following up each "Farewell Tour" with a "Comeback Tour" 6 months later.

Koppel's spent less time on Nightline in the past few years than Johnny Carson spent in his final years hosting The Tonight Show. Just about ever time I turned it on it was Chris Bury serving as anchor.

Koppel seemed only want to host the show for the "big" events while spending the rest of his time on special assignment/try-and-win-a-big-media-award shows. His petulant "there's no news here" retreat from the 1996 Republican National Convention was pretty much a sign that Ted had decided his tastes and position were now too refined to actually cover something he deemed to be either trash news or a dog-and-pony show for the media.

Of course, with Bill Moyers retired, PBS is just waiting for someone to fill the void for pretentious 30- to 60-minute tomes on what's wrong with the world and how to make everything all better again. The opening's there Ted, and Charlie Rose needs a new lead-in -- go for it!
