TRUTH IN ADVERTISING
bushisms The president's accidental wit and wisdom (Jacob Weisberg, Slate, 02/25/04).
"But the true strength of America is found in the hearts and souls of people like Travis, people who are willing to love their neighbor, just like they would like to love themselves."—Springfield, Mo., Feb. 9, 2004 (Thanks to George Dupper)"Bushisms" is usually just an excuse for Slate to pick on the President for being inarticulate and stupid. As such, it suits the purposes of both Democrats and Republicans. This entry, however, lives up to the subtitle -- accidental or not, this is both wit and wisdom. For those of us who believe in Fallen man, the President has improved on the original. We might not care if we are loved by our neighbors, but what wouldn't we give to love ourselves. In Amsterdam, about ten euros should do the trick.
Posted by: Chris at February 25, 2004 4:50 PMIn truth, there is more wisdom in this statement than might meet the eye. If a person were to truly love themself, would they perform actions (eating, fitness, morally) which were in any way not of benefit to them?
The comment may have been misphrased as to the biblical reference. It is, perhaps, not in error.
Posted by: Mike Goblet at February 25, 2004 5:35 PMIt's no different than Best of the Web's comparitive quotes, we the best quotes of historic politicians are compared to random quotes of today, as if the quoted people never uttered stupid trivialities.
Nit picking like that is fun, as long as it's not confused with paying attention.
Mike:
Sure they would. Love and wisdom are separate concepts, with little overlap.
Most people love their children, but not enough parents refuse to buy Jane and Johnny junk food, and insist that the kids get some exercise.
