UPI WINS:

Kerry denies allegations of infidelity (UPI, Feb 13 2004)

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., front-runner for the U.S. Democratic presidential nomination, Friday denied he engaged in an extra-marital affair.

"Well, there is nothing to report," Kerry told the talk radio show Imus in the Morning. "So there is nothing to talk about. I'm not worried about it. No."

Where's the part where he denied the allegation? This is a Nixonian non-denial-denial.

Kerry Says He's Ready for GOP Onslaught (DAVID ESPO, 2/13/04, AP)

John Kerry, attacked by President Bush's campaign as a pretend foe of the special interests, said Friday he is "ready to fight back" in the battle for the White House. Former candidate Wesley Clark offered to help the front-runner oust the Republican incumbent.

"These guys will want to try to do everything to change the subject," the Democratic presidential front-runner said in an interview on the Don Imus radio program.

Might help if he weren't standing next to the guy who raised the subject of his "intern problem".

Imus throws him a softball question, along the lines of "should I stop supporting you because of this?" and Kerry says "No, of course not."

What else do you expect him to say? It's not like he's going to say something like, "Well, yes, Don, I’ve been such an alley cat getting it on with my little 20-year old ’tomato’ behind Theresa's back that I’m unfit to be president. You should drop me like a live grenade and endorse Kucinich." Real likely, that.

Every four years we hear the phrase "this is going to be the dirtiest election ever". Look at elections in other countries if you want dirty nasty elections.

Had Clark raised the issue again, condemned Kerry and endorsed Howard Dean (or Edwards), it might have been more interesting.

But to do that would have been very insulting to his patron.

The rumors seem to have come from Clark's camp (Lehane specifically) but I think Wesley was trying to bail out and endorse Kerry before the ball really got rolling. Drudge just got the info out before Clark expected. My guess is that Wes knew it was coming out and couldn't get it stopped, or possibly Lehane really was freelancing in an effort to get picked up by one of the remaining candidates.

Some people think Wes is doing this to stay in the veepstakes. I doubt that, unless it is as Edward's VP choice. Kerry doesn't need a VP with military experience (he's got that covered) and I doubt that Wes would help him much in the South. Edwards might want him for the miliatary background, though putting him one heartbeat away from the presidency is going to attract all kinds of attention to some of Clark's more bizzare campaign statements. I heard a snippet of him on CNN before his exit and he was in full throttle Dean/Gore meltdown mode.
